THE KIDS' GUIDE TO BIRDS PROGRAM

In a dynamic partnership with the City of Hyattsville and Rosa L. Parks Elementary School , Waxwing Media has created the first in a series of field guides by kids.

The Kids’ Guide to Birds © Vol. 1 is now available in magazine format. Researched, written, and illustrated by elementary school students, the guide offers vivid portraits of many of the species that inhabit our urban green spaces.

Future issues of The Kids’ Guide to Birds will focus on different geographic areas, producing a far-ranging record of our urban birds, as seen through the eyes of kids.

By connecting with the wildlife around them, the youngsters discover talents within themselves. Ultimately, The Kids’ Guide to Birds project fosters a sense of stewardship over the environment upon which we all depend for healthy and vibrant communities.

* The project has received generous support from The City of Hyattsville and Target.

THE KIDS' GUIDE TO BIRDs © VOL 1

In exploring nature,

kids discover talents within themselves

The Kids’ Guide to Birds © initiative blends outdoor discovery and rich classroom experiences aligned to state standards in science, math, writing, and the arts. The project boosts academic achievement and fosters a sense of stewardship over the environment upon which we all depend.

The Kids’ Guide to Birds, Vol 1 is the first in a series. Produced by students, the guide showcases their research, personal observations, art, and writing.

This work is not meant to be an exhaustive guide to all the birds in the Hyattsville area. Rather it is a compilation of those species which the participating students spotted or simply loved learning about. Kids, some as young as six, were the creators of The Kids’ Guide to Birds. But, don’t be fooled by the age of our contributing writers: some listed facts are on the cutting edge of scientific discovery!

We hope you find this guide interesting, educational and inspiring. May you enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed working with these extraordinary young artists and scientists!
